A legitimate debt collector will perform their services within the industry guidelines and follow Federal and State laws in their dealings.
The debt collector must tell you the name of the creditor, amount owed, and dates AFTER they verify they are communicating with the proper consumer. This information is also provided to you when the debt collector first gets the account from the client or right after their first contact with you.
Debt collectors will not threaten you with jail time or pose as a government official. Be aware if you owe a court ordered fine a failure to pay may result in arrest.
A debt collector will not tell other people without your permission. They can ask others for your whereabouts or a way to contact you
They must call you between 8 am and 9 pm but never at a place or time if they know it is inconvenient.
If in doubt about the debt collector contact, ask for a call back number, name, address. You may then check with the creditor if needed to satisfy yourself before giving the debt collector personal financial information
